The North American university application system actively encourages students to include their DofE experience. Over the past 20 years, 80%+ of Ivy100 students bound for top US universities have participated, with 70%+ earning an award.
Three Levels of Achievement
The award has three levels — Bronze, Silver, and Gold — completed in sequence over 1–4 years, from ages 14 to 18. Each level requires completing four components: Skills Learning, Physical Recreation, Community Service, and an Outdoor Expedition. The challenge is self-improvement, not competition with others, encouraging young people to grow through balanced development, independence, resilience, and responsibility.
